A father’s account of the story that captivated America, the murder of his daughter, reporter Alison Parker, on live television, and his inspiring fight for commonsense gun laws in the aftermath.

On August 26, 2015, Emmy Award–winning twenty-four-year-old reporter Alison Parker was murdered on live television, along with her colleague, photojournalist Adam Ward. Their interviewee was also shot, but survived. People watching at home heard the gunshots, and the gunman’s video of the murder, which he uploaded to Facebook, would spread over the internet like wildfire.

In the wake of his daughter’s murder, Andy Parker became a national advocate for commonsense gun safety legislation. The night of the murder, with his emotions still raw, he went on Fox News and vowed to do “whatever it takes” to end gun violence in America. Today he is a media go-to each time a shooting rocks the national consciousness, and has worked with a range of other crusaders, like Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Lenny Pozner, whose son was killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School and brought suit against Alex Jones and Infowars, who claimed the shooting was staged. In For Alison, Parker shares his work as a powerhouse battling gun violence and gives a plan for commonsense gun legislation that all sides should agree on. He calls out the NRA-backed politicians blocking the legislation, shares his fight against “truthers,” who claim Alison’s murder was fabricated, and reveals what’s ahead in his fight to do whatever it takes to stop gun violence.

Parker’s story is one of great loss, but also resilience, determination, and a call to action. Senator Tim Kaine, also a fierce advocate for commonsense gun laws, contributes a moving foreword.

"Andy Parker is an angry man, and I don’t blame him one bit. A well written book about unspeakable tragedy and a family’s response to make things better. If people listened to Mr. Parker, we’d move beyond, “They want to take my guns”, and into common sense."

For Alison The Murder of a Young Journalist and a Father Fight for Gun Safety Andy Parker Senator Tim Kaine Ben R Williams Books Reviews

  • Losing a child would be heartbreaking. Losing a child to violence is horrendous, but having your child murdered on live TV and knowing that videos of her death are there to view at the click of a mouse is both heartbreaking and unimaginable.

Andy and Barbara Parker know that heartbreak and deal with it every single day. For Alison tells the story of what it feels like to lose a child to preventable gun violence. It is the story of a father’s fight for gun reform to keep guns from mentally unstable people. This book tells the story of a rising star in television whose life was ended tragically, along with her friend and photographer Adam Ward.

This book is also about “the club no one wants to join.” Unfortunately, since Alison’s death, hundreds more have been murdered and more families have joined this club.

Parker talks also about events he’ll never experience, such as walking Alison down the aisle and seeing her happily married. Parker is honest and often blunt, but he is definitely a man with a mission to protect others from the loss and pain that he and Barbara live with daily.

The first 3 chapters are a hard read. I had to take breaks because I couldn’t read through my tears. It’s important to note that this is not a book about taking away everyone’s guns. It’s about his daughter, his life, and his platform gun reform—keeping guns away from unstable people.
  • I reading it now. I’m having to stop every little bit, though. The emotion is so raw, I have to stop and center myself in order to continue reading. Andy Parker takes you inside his head, and it is almost as though you are experiencing that devastating time just as he did.
This is indeed a club nobody wants to join, but due to Andy’s gifted storytelling it’s quite easy to put yourself in his shoes and experience this horror right along with him.
    It’s a wonderful book!
I agree with Lawrence O’ Donnell, it’s just as though you are sitting at Andy’s kitchen table just listening to him tell you the story.
We don’t have to live this way, and after reading this book, you will be motivated to do something about it!
  • Andy Parker pays beautiful tribute to his murdered daughter Alison, painting an intimate portrait of an ambitious young journalist with remarkable opportunities ahead of her (as well as marriage to a wonderful man). Parker also provides insight on the grief process of gun violence survivors, candidly admitting his own struggles. But what ultimately comes through every page of this book is Parker's fierce determination to honor Alison by preventing future acts of gun violence. His willingness to speak truth to power as part of that process is admirable and will inspire. A terrific book for those seeking to understand the role of victims and survivors in America's gun violence prevention movement.
  • Andy Parker is an angry man, and I don’t blame him one bit. A well written book about unspeakable tragedy and a family’s response to make things better. If people listened to Mr. Parker, we’d move beyond, “They want to take my guns”, and into common sense.
  • It is, of course, impossible to truly know what Barbara and Andy Parker experienced after the tragic and senseless murder of their precious daughter, Alison. But Andy's raw, honest, and sometime hard to read account comes as close as humanly possible to sharing that experience, and the experience of everyone who's lost a loved one to gun violence, in a way that makes it real and very personal to the reader. Most of all, this book removes all doubt that gun violence will happen again and again and, one day, it may happen to you unless all of us do our part in ending it.
  • Andy Parker has hit the nail on the head with this look into his personal trial of horrendous loss. He uses the unfathomable pain he suffers after his daughter is shot on live television during an interview into a campaign against the gun lobbyists and political figures that can change the laws. His goal is to make every citizen safe from ever having to experience what he and his wife Barbara did. His slogan is "Whatever it takes." and Parker is working it like he means it. The book is a difficult read if you are affected by emotions being ripped open. The Parker's loss is written through Andy's eyes. I never felt so involved as I did with his descriptive narrative of how he made it through those first three days and then beyond. What he did after that is amazing and inspiring . Good read, I recommend this book.
  • Andy Parker's pointed and raw commentary on gun violence, social media, and conspiracy theorists in the wake of his daughter's murder on live television is gut-wrenching, painful, and an absolute must-read for anyone who thinks change needs to happen in the United States.

I can't put the book down, and I hate that I can't. It's raw and breaks your heart, but it is written in such a way that you have to read more about a broken father navigating the cruel waters after gun violence took away his only daughter.
  • As I read this book, I found myself shutting down at times. Reading Andy Parker’s own words of his experience took me to the edge of the cliff. I had to back away or I would start crying and screaming, imagining the loss of my own children; knowing the despair would be so much worse if it actually happened. Most of the time we protect ourselves from these intense feelings. But we need to stop looking away and see the mass casualties around us from so much gun violence. More guns have not reduce the number of deaths from murder, suicide or accidents involving guns. In spite of what the IRA says, the number is growing. We are not safer. Sane, reasonable people need to read this book to trigger the kind of reaction that gets them, us, everyone, to act.

Underworld The Mysterious Origins of Civilization Audible Audio Edition Graham Hancock Dennis Kleinman Tantor Audio Books Reviews

  • If you like Hancock's work, you'll like this. It's a good read, with a lot of factual information. This one does get a bit long at times, but that's due to how in depth the research is, and how many locations Hancock has actually put his hands on. A lot of ground is covered.

The Malta material gets a bit off line with conspiracy theories which is a shame, because Hancock really does provide a lot of legitimate research and science to support his theories in this book. It really wasn't necessary.

If you enjoy Hancock's other books, then get it.
  • My order of the Graham Hancock book "Underworld The Origins Of Human Civilization" arrived after being on order for about two weeks. It was packaged well and was easy to extract from the shipping box. This huge book was filled from start to finish with astounding finds that Mr. Hancock and his fellow explorers uncovered across the globe in the later 1990's and the early part of the last decade. Mr. Hancock is convinced that humankind from past eons had actually developed truly advanced civilizations, but war and natural disasters all too often destroyed them without barely a trace of their ever having existed. This book covers many areas of our world where seemingly impossible archaeological finds are being unearthed and "unsead" (for want of a better term).
  • If I was a multi billionaire, I would make sure that Underworld, Fingerprints of the Gods and Magicians of the Gods would become part of the school curriculum all over the world. This book and the others I mentioned are excellent. Knowing this one was put out in 2002, it makes me have a deep degree of belief in Graham's insights because as time as sauntered forward, more and more evidence is vindicating all of his claims. He is a REMBRANDT!!
  • Graham Hancock never fails to please. This is the third of his books I have read and hardly any of the information was repeated. If you are interested in prehistory, this is the book for you. When I learned that the oceans of the world are hundreds of feet high than they were at the Last Glacial Maximum I started wondering what happened to all that coastline that is now inundated by water.

This book explains what underwater archaeologists have discovered. A lot of this material Hancock himself had seen first hand. The photographs are awesome.

Hancock has a writing style that is extremely readable in spite of the complex subjects he tackles. I like that he interjects a little wry humor and biting wit when dealing with his adversaries.

A thoroughly entertaining, informative and eye-opening trip through the oceans of planet earth. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
  • If found this to be a very interesting read. The author is honest in his opinions. When there is ambiguity, he readily admits it. I did find it ironic in that he mentions a couple times that he thinks the ancient alien theory (as of 2001 when the book was written) is bunk, but then he has been on multiple episodes of the t.v. show since 2010. Perhaps his opinion has changed? In any event, this book is worth your time.
  • I'm on the last chapter of what can be at times a challenging read. Author Hancock has done some extensive research into this subject and brought it all together. As stated in some of his former works, he believes that the traditional view of Archaeologist, is missing a massive piece of the puzzle. When you look at edifices like the Pyramids, which exist all over the world, their perfect astrological alignment and massive construction, we are lead to believe that Men barley out of the stone age, were responsible for this construction, with rudimentary tools, of these massive construction projects that would be a challenge to today's modern Construction companies with powered equipment, Hancock's belief is that this technology and construction savvy, just didn't pop up one day, but was the results of a developed society and engineers, that existed in the pre deluge days of the planet. Hancock revels that in pretty much every culture on the planet there is a Noah Ark like story, of collecting animals, or seed and finding refuge before the great flood, and the survival of the few afterwards. Hancock goes on with this theory, with the help of modern technology and diverse disciplines that show pre flood maps of the coast lines of world, prior to the melting Ice caps. His dives in various places in the world revel man made structures beneath the waves, that match up to local legends. His belief that there is a pre history of this planet that explains these gaps in our understanding of civilization, but they exist in this not so hidden Underworld.

Deep Survival Who Lives Who Dies and Why eBook Laurence Gonzales Reviews

  • I read Laurence Gonzales’ “Deep Survival Who Lives, Who Dies, And Why” as a counterpoint to Amanda Ripley’s “The Unthinkable.” Both are survivor books, very different in their approach, but with significant conclusions in common. Gonzales focuses more on accidents unexpected twists that challenge people in stressful situations they chose to put themselves in, primarily wilderness and sporting recreational activities. Gonzales focuses little on true disasters, where our daily lives are suddenly interrupted by a wholly unexpected catastrophic and immediately life threatening event from which we must escape; Ripley focuses on true disasters. Gonzales focuses a lot on scientific, technical biological explanations; Ripley talks a lot about pseudo-scientific evolutionary biology. Gonzales is a more florid writer on a semi-autobiographical quest following a life of adventure; Ripley is a straightforward young writer trying to analyze what others do.

But this review is about Gonzales’ book, which aspires to “tell people [not] what to do but rather to be a search for a deeper understanding that will allow them to know what to do when the time comes.” His book tries to provide an overarching philosophy, really, for life survival, not just survival when you’re lost in the woods or hanging off a mountain. In fact, if there is a unifying theme of “Deep Survival,” other than survival itself, it is Stoicism. Quotations from Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius litter the book, and their ideas permeate every page. For example, from Epictetus “On the occasion of every accident that befalls you, remember to turn to yourself and inquire what power you have for turning it to use.” This is because Gonzales believes, with demonstrated reason, that a Stoic approach to unexpected twists in life will maximize your chances for survival, in whatever situation you find yourself.

Gonzales ties all his stories and thoughts back to himself—back to his own growing appreciation for these principles he discovers during his life, and most of all back to his father’s experiences in World War Two and the rest of his life (he was a bomber pilot alive at the time this book was written, 2004). If you don’t like the personal angle, it may seem a bit navel-gazing. But he does a good job making himself and his family relevant, and after all, it’s his book, not merely a textbook for the wanna-be survivor.

Gonzales spends the first half of the book evaluating “How Accidents Happen.” In other words, most of what he focuses on is preventable survival problems. For him, if you stay home, there will be no survival problem. And, for the most part, if you go out into the wilderness and make the right choices, there will also be no survival problem. What Gonzales wants to know in this section is why people act in ways that create situations in which they must survive. His conclusion, shot through the book, is that it’s down to uncontrollable emotions, mostly for bad, but also for good. Quoting Remarque’s description in “All Quiet On The Western Front” of men who, having been at the front for a while, thrown themselves to the ground on sheer reflex, even before they can hear or sense a shell, Gonzales concludes “Emotion is an instinctive response aimed at self-preservation.” But that same instinctive response can also betray.

There is much talk of dopamine, brain structures, stress hormones, memory, and, in the end, “that quality which is perhaps the only one which may be said with certainty to make for success, self-control.” Our brains conspire to impel us by inciting emotions to do things that are not rational and not a good idea, but seem like a good idea to our brains. We need this type of decision making, since it is fast and effective, but it can kill us, if the emotion leads us to do something objectively stupid. Panic is only one of those emotions; pleasurable emotions are also extremely powerful. Controlling those emotions without losing their benefit is everything. And not just the control of manipulation—also the control of knowing what you don’t know. “A survivor expects the world to keep changing and keeps his senses always tuned to What’s up? The survivor is continuously adapting.” “[T]he survivor ‘does not impose pre-existing patterns on new information, but rather allows new information to reshape [his mental models].’”

Of course, even choosing activities carefully while engaging in rigid self-control is often not enough. Accident always happen; it is the nature of systems, even simple systems. Small failures are self-correcting or at least not catastrophic, until the day they combine with other happenings to create total failure. As with a sand pile, which slides and collapses in unpredictable ways, you can tell that an accident will happen despite your best efforts, but not how or when. (It helps, of course, not to be stupid or have undesirable characteristics. Gonzales, like Ripley, casually slags fat people as unlikely to survive.) This is a commonality of systems Gonzales notes that Clausewitz pointed out that military systems seemed simple, and therefore easy to manage, but “terrible friction . . . is everywhere in contact with chance, with consequences that are impossible to calculate.” Again, Clausewitz says a general must not “expect a level of precision in his operation that simply cannot be achieved owing to this very friction.” And trying to impose our own reality on actual reality when that friction starts to bite is disastrous.

Even if you choose carefully and have self-control, and avoid a system failure, you may still end up in a survival situation by simple failure of knowledge. If you don’t bother to inquire how the local waves differ from the waves you are familiar with, you may end up in trouble that you could have easily avoided. Gonzales does not promise that everything will be OK; he merely offers analysis and advice for maximizing the chance of avoiding problems.

Gonzales then turns to “Survival”—what to do when, for whatever reason, you’ve ended up in a survival situation. Many people “bend the map”—they try to, when lost in an unfamiliar area, rationalize how they are really in a familiar area. Don’t do that. Be as Stoic as possible. Accept your fate yet work to change it. Never follow rules given by others just because they are rules or because they are the group. Never give up. Fatigue is mostly psychological and difficult to recover from; rest proactively rather than pushing yourself. Balance risk and reward, then act decisively—be a “man of action.” Pray—even if it doesn’t work, it helps you focus and take action. (Although neither Gonzales nor Ripley emphasize it, both note that religious people are far more likely to survive.) “Plan the flight and fly the plan. But don’t fall in love with the plan.” Give yourself small goals and achieve small successes; follow a routine; create order. Focus on yourself, not on blaming others, or relying on them. And, ultimately, you may still die. “But what can be earned is a certain nobility—not in the sense of aristocratic status but in the sense of striving for quality and dignity of behavior and living.” The last is said by a wilderness firefighter of his daily job, but it can just as well be applied to a survivor in a single desperate situation.

None of what Gonzales says is all that startling. I imagine many of us would list some variations on these if asked the question, “what should one do to survive?” But Gonzales weaves these principles into a coherent whole, and links them to a range of interesting stories about real people. As with Ripley’s book, whose more cut-and-dried lessons Gonzales echoes, the reader can benefit quite a bit from this book, if you read carefully and absorb the lessons.
  • Why does a seasoned hunter die when catastrophe strikes in the wilderness, but a four-year-old child manages to stay alive? What separates the victim from the survivor? Mr. Gonzales has written a comprehensive book on the subject, analyzing accounts of tragic misfortunes for clues. And at the center lies the brain. How quickly a human adapts to a rapidly deteriorating situation—whether it be the sinking of a boat in the ocean or a broken limb on a mountainside or the imprisonment in a World War II German POW camp—has everything to do with letting go of preconceived notions of how the situation should be and instead facing the reality of what lay before them and how to develop a plan of action. We must plan, but we must be able to let go of the plan as well.

In the end, he boils it down to the following rules of adventure perceive, believe, then act—intelligence is a matter of “guessing well.” Avoid impulsive behavior; don’t hurry. Know your stuff—a deep knowledge of the world may save your life. Get the information you need for the activity you plan to engage in. Commune with the dead—meaning, understand how other people got into trouble and why they died. And most importantly, be humble. Embrace the beginner’s mind. A Navy Seal commander stated that “the Rambo types are the first to go.”
  • This is one of the best 20 books I've read in my life. If read on multiple levels, it is far more than about survival in "adventure sports" or combat. It's about how to handle all kinds of disasters that we all eventually face. The book is elegantly written, too. I have been a sea kayaker, scuba diver, and backpacker over the course of my life and as I read I remembered incidents and people over decades of my life. (No fatalities thank goodness, though some deserved to die). As for myself, this book has kept me from doing some insanely stupid things -- and reminded my of dumb things I've done that should have killed me. I have recommended this book to any number of friends (and I heard of it from my closest brother). I always tell them, "If you read this book and think of it as simply a series of people making mistakes, you haven't 'gotten it'. Look underneath and find the deeper things and you will find them."
  • I liked the instructive examples of survivors' stories. I didn't like the apparent lack of organization. The theme of the book seems to be something like, "survival skill- you either got it, or you don't". What it actually is, is hard to say. (It's a book about nothing!)
The author has a touch of braggadocio as he flaunts the reckless courage (or foolishness) he has exercised in his lifetime. But, I suppose, "It ain't braggin' if you done it."
I'm very glad to have read it. It has helped me see my past and present actions in a more detailed filter of "the right stuff" that all Achievers grasp for. And he inadvertently affirms many biblical or proverbial truths about a godly spirit, a spirit that simultaneously stretches for the stars, but exerts no grip on his actions. A state of being that is both intentional and Laissez Faire, or spirit led. It reveals a Zen like attitude of loving the very substance of your present state for the beauty that can be found there, and in the act of loving rather than fearing or dreading, anguish flees and creativity is borne. This is the very essence of a converted heart, a heart in tune with God, dead to self, alive to the spirit. This book channels these notions.
    A pleasurable read.
  • It appears I am in the minority. I found the book a meandering mix of pseudopsychology, attempts at philosophy aping “Zen and the Art...”, and self-aggrandizement. For a truly well-written and unflinchingly rational examination of survival and tragedy, read William Langewiesche.

"I just got my Standard of Grace Guided journal in the mail. It's a beautiful book, and would look really pretty sitting on my bookshelf. However, I'm really disappointed in the journals content. I was so excited for this, but actually flipping through the pages, I realize that there's at least one picture (sometimes two) of Emily and/or her family and/or her home and/or her business for every weeks entry. Every week. I know that her books are full of pictures as well, which honestly they don't bother me TOO much. And don't get me wrong, the pictures are beautiful, and some of them stand out as a great illustration of that week's entry. But for a journal that is supposed to help us dig into OUR OWN lives and OUR OWN hearts and go deep and really do the hard work for our own selves, there sure is a LOOOOOOOT of Emily that you'll have to look at while you're doing that. Emily Ley does a lot of things AMAZINGLY. I love most of her products. The Simplified Planner has helped me SO much, and her books are full of a lot of truths that I think more people should live their lives by. But this guided journal. It just really missed the mark for me. 😞"

A Standard of Grace Guided Journal Emily Ley Books Reviews

  • I just got my Standard of Grace Guided journal in the mail. 😞
  • Let me say, I'm a fan of Emily Ley and her message of simplification. A Simplified Life was the catalyst of so much good in my life and I swear by her planner, however this journal woefully missed the mark. There's something so off by asking people to dig deep and do internal reflecting with a picture of your life plastered on every page. The first prompt is "How did you get the idea that you had to be 'put together' in all aspects of life?” And then it's immediately followed by photoshopped, curated, perfect book-worthy photos. To be clear, I know this isn't entirely reflective of her life the same way I know social media is a highlight reel. I don't struggle with feeling like she's inauthentic. I just feel like it's marketing gone wrong. I get it. She's a brand now. In many ways her life[style] is her brand. But to have a header of "Life can messy but the mess is worth it" with a barely crumpled bed comforter and 3 immaculate children - one with her hair bow perfectly in tact - strikes me as tone deaf. Some photos make sense. Others just... don't. A journal encouraging women to get to their gut truth of their life need not be a photobook of yours. White space would've been so welcomed here.
  • The journal questions are unique and thought-provoking. See also Emily's coaching via Instagram Lives.
  • I was really pretty hopeful when I first heard about this journal and was able to pick one up at Target when they first released there. I was disappointed though with the number of pictures of Emily and her family. Don't get me wrong - I'm a huge fan of Emily and it's so fun to see how her family is growing. This journal is supposed to be about me and my journey though and it feels more like a story about Emily and her family. The pictures are just really distracting for me and I haven't managed to stick with it. I wish they would just release a journal with lined pages and their signature covers. Something like the weekly notes pages. This journal just won't do it do it for me but hopefully it will be helpful for someone else.
  • So many guided journals have been released lately. This one is stunning, in typical Emily Ley fashion. Everything from the page layout to the multiple ribbons to hold your place to the colors. The purpose of this journal is to give a starting place to simplify in order to bring grace and peace to your home. Emily Ley wants to partner with the reader to nurture dreams, discover hopes and pay attention. It has quotes, journaling prompts with plenty of space to write answers and such great encouragement. In fact, the book starts with Emily sharing the reason behind the multiple ribbons - this guided journal is supposed to be a journey, including stops, starts and times when you might double back. I've never seen a journal like that before.

Like all guided journals, you're going to get what you put into answering each prompt. I thought the prompts were good. Some more challenging than others, but that might be because of what's going on in my life know or what books I've recently read or even what topics I've processed in the last year. If you're willing to be honest, vulnerable and dig deep on these pages, I think you'll greatly enjoy this guided journal. Disclaimer I got a copy of this journal in exchange for posting my honest thoughts.

Volcanic vineyards listed as UNESCO World Heritage, a “peace wine” blending over 600 varieties from around the world, vines standing 15 metres tall in Italy and Portugal, ice wines from Quebec, a wine from the Gobi desert, Taiwan's huge yields, harvesting on 31 December, classical music among the vines, a Bordeaux made with dry ice, a sparkling wine for disgorging at home …
This book features the viticultural techniques of many countries; they are far enough off the radar to delight anyone who loves originality and hates standardization.
The book covers eight topics
• Climates • Terroirs
• Grape varieties • Work in the vineyard
• Winemaking • Colour
• Ageing • Packaging
